Our products install from the browser in five steps. Here is what each step checks and why it is there.
Most buyers of a software product are not developers. They should not need a terminal to get started. That is why every KodaxStudios product ships with a web installer. Upload the files, open your domain, and the installer takes over.
1. Requirements
The installer checks the PHP version, the required extensions and whether the folders it needs are writable. An old MySQL or MariaDB version shows a warning rather than stopping you, because many hosts upgrade slowly and the warning is enough to act on.
2. Database
You enter your database details and the installer tests the connection before it does anything else. It refuses a database that already has tables in it, so it can never overwrite someone's existing data. Then it creates every table the product needs.
3. Admin account
You choose the email and password for the first administrator. The details are kept until the very end of the install: the site only counts as installed once an admin exists, so a half-finished install can always be completed.
4. Licence
Your Envato purchase code is checked against our licence server. If the licence server cannot be reached, the installer saves the code and carries on, so a network problem never blocks an install. The code is activated later in the background. Once the licence step is done, the admin account is created and the site is switched on.
5. Finish
The installer switches the site on and locks itself. From then on, the installer pages are closed and everything is managed from the admin panel.
Why it matters
A good installer is the difference between a customer who launches on day one and one who asks for a refund. We build ours with the same care as the product itself, and we install every product on a fresh server through its own installer before we call it ready. See them in action on our live product demos.
